DESIGNING MOVEMENT: An Aesthetic Investigation of Motion in Product Design

In this sketch, I explored the idea of floating or drifting. I imagined these three cubes being pushed slowly forward and then separating as if in zero gravity. I also focused on varying the character of the three cubes’ individual movements in order to establish a clear visual dominance. The top block, for example, moves in a more interesting way than the other two, which initially draws your eye upward. The middle block holds a secondary interest, and the bottom block performs the least compelling motion. Therefore, I’m using kinetics to visually order and rank the parts of this composition.
